Optimal Angle of Solar Panel Research

Optimal angle of solar panels can depend by the day, but there are more generalized angles that we can make use of depending on the season or month. It’s important to angle solar panels to get up to 40% more power from them.

Chart shows optimal angle in Binghamton which should not be too far off for our case in NYC.

Study of sufficient number of optimal tilt angle adjustment to maximize residential solar panels yield. (2017). 2017 IEEE Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI), Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI), 2017 IEEE, 1. https://doi.org/10.1109/PECI.2017.7935747

Here are the approximate estimates of the optimal angle of the solar panels for MetroTech Center:

  • February 5th – Set to same angle as your latitude – 40.69°
  • May 5th – Set at the same angle as your latitude minus 15 degrees. At noon the panel will be almost horizontal to the ground – 25.69°
  • August 5th – Set at the same angle as your latitude – 40.69°
  • November 5th – Set at the angle of latitude plus 15 degrees, this tilts your panels towards the sun as it travels low in the southern sky during the winter – 65.69°
